Parents, teenagers and older people often ask the same question: is there an age limit for shilajit? There is no official age limit written into law for shilajit, because it is sold as a dietary supplement, and there is very little research on its use in young people. For that reason the sensible position is that shilajit is meant for healthy adults, and that anyone under 18, and anyone older who has a health condition or takes medication, should speak to a doctor first. This guide explains why, what to think about for each age group, and what a careful approach looks like. It is general information, not medical advice. It belongs to our full guide on shilajit kaise use karein (how to use shilajit). Last updated: October 2026.
Is there an official shilajit age limit?
No age limit has been set for shilajit as a supplement, and no standard children's dose exists. That is different from saying it is safe at any age. Because the research is mostly on adults and is limited even there, the careful reading is that shilajit is intended for adults. If you see a seller claiming it is suitable for children or recommending a dose for them, treat that claim with suspicion.
Children under 12
Shilajit is not recommended for children. There is no reliable evidence about its safety for them, and children's bodies handle supplements differently from adults. A child who is tired, weak or not growing well needs a doctor's attention, not a supplement. Do not give resin to a child on the strength of something you read online.
Teenagers (12 to 17)
Teenagers sometimes become interested in shilajit for sports or energy. The same caution applies: there is little research, and bodies are still developing. We do not recommend shilajit for under-18s unless a doctor has said so. If a teenager wants more energy or better recovery, sleep, food, water and training are the first places to look.
Adults 18 and over
Healthy adults are the group traditional use and most information refers to. Even so, adults should start with a small serving, use the traditional pea-sized amount, and ask a doctor first if they are pregnant or breastfeeding, take regular medication, or have a condition such as diabetes, blood pressure, kidney or iron-related issues. The serving and method are covered in our guides on dosage and on how to take shilajit.
Older adults
There is no upper age limit for shilajit either, but older adults are more likely to take regular medication or have conditions that matter here. If you are over 60 and take any medicines, in particular for blood pressure, blood sugar or blood thinning, ask your doctor or pharmacist before adding shilajit. A smaller starting serving is also sensible.
Why age is not the only question
A healthy 30-year-old and an unwell 30-year-old are very different cases, so age is only one part of the picture. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, medication, existing conditions and the quality of the product matter as much. Unpurified shilajit can carry heavy metals, which is risky at any age. Our guide to side effects covers the main cautions, and our guide to real vs fake shilajit explains how to check quality.
A careful approach in practice
If you are an adult and want to try shilajit: choose a product with an independent lab report, start with a small serving, keep to the traditional amount, and stop if you notice anything unusual. If you are under 18, or buying for someone who is, talk to a doctor first. If you are unsure about your situation, ask. A short conversation costs nothing.
